Morand launches an unprecedented energy storage solution with 72-second vehicle charging.
Swiss tech start-up Morand has launched a breakthrough energy storage technology, Morand eTechnology, that can charge a city car in 72 seconds. The unique hybrid system combines the properties of an ultracapacitor with those of a chemical battery to create a long-lasting and ultra-fast energy pack that can be meaningfully charged in seconds.
The Morand eTechnology is ideal for applications that require fast, half-frequency charges of around 5 minutes or less. This opens up the possibility for myriad applications, from city cars and drones to e-bikes and e-scooters, robotics, aggrotech, defense, railroad locomotives and more. Wherever fast charging and discharging is required, eTechnology offers a leap in performance.
The eTechnology packages use innovative Hybrid Ultracapacitor (HUC) cells from Sech SA through an exclusive partnership. These cells are used in combination with advanced controllers to safely achieve eTechnology’s exceptionally high levels of performance.
Independent testing by Geo Technology has clearly demonstrated Morand eTechnology’s ability to charge a 7.2kWh test unit up to 900A / 360kW in 120s (98% charge).
While there are numerous technologies that can charge and discharge quickly, they are almost always limited by the number of cycles they can complete before capacity begins to decline. Morand’s eTechnology achieves this with much greater durability than other systems. The tests have demonstrated their ability to complete more than 50,000 cycles, with the longest-running test unit now reaching 70,000 cycles.
In contrast to conventional lithium-ion battery packs, eTechnology is significantly less dependent on materials such as lithium and cobalt. While some lithium is used, it’s mostly aluminum, graphene, and carbon. An important part of Morand’s offering is its fire protection system, which is already market-leading and continues to evolve.
As the design and engineering firm behind the technology, Morand works with a manufacturing partner to manufacture the units. Although production volumes are currently relatively small compared to lithium-ion cells, there are already extensive plans to ramp up production.
This will help bring eTechnology closer to price parity with lithium-ion solutions. Another important aspect is the overall life cycle of the storage system. With 5 or 10 times the number of possible discharge cycles, long-term operating costs can be significantly lower than an equivalent lithium-ion system.
As part of the company’s efforts to scale eTechnology production, Morand is actively seeking additional investments. As part of this, the company is open to employees who wish to adapt eTechnology to specific or niche applications that would benefit from its innovations and advances in energy storage capability.
