Repairify Announces Plans to Establish New Training Institute – Repairer Driven News | CarTailz

Repairify has announced plans to launch the Repairify Institute, a comprehensive technical training program for automotive professionals that allows students to work at their own pace to earn certifications or expand their learning on various automotive topics.

Announced during the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the program will use a course development process called adaptive learning, in which instruction is tailored to the learner’s strengths and areas for improvement.

Also included is a mentoring support program that tracks the progress of new skills learned, and a ‘Proof of Skill’ policy to ensure each student can demonstrate mastery of the skills learned to make safe and proper repairs.

The program will be delivered through a combination of online e-learning, virtual classrooms and eventually six physical locations called Centers of Excellence, which will serve as testing and certification centers for students. The first is scheduled to open in Richardson, Texas in early 2023, Repairify said in its announcement.

“The Repairify Institute is the embodiment of the Repairify mission to help automotive repair professionals in their quest to simplify complex repairs,” said Cris Hollingsworth, president of Repairify Global Holdings, Inc., in a statement. “Not only are we enabling this mission with our patented technology, but we are also developing curriculum and courses that help technicians achieve and maintain certification in their desired areas of expertise.”

The founding of the institute is overseen by Chris Chesney, a veteran in automotive education and development who became Repairify’s vice president of training and organizational development in November 2021.

Chesney told Repairer Driven News that adaptive learning has existed for 20 to 25 years but hasn’t been used in the repair space because “it’s difficult and expensive.”

Instead of the traditional model of presenting information to a group of students and testing them against stored knowledge, adaptive learning performs a dynamic assessment of each student’s knowledge, “leaving the knowledge behind, learning what they don’t know, and remedial action.” ‘ Chesney said that.”

“Adaptive learning requires that we build goals at such a deep micro level to make sure we know you have an understanding of that concept, theory or skill,” he said. “We can’t just say ‘describe the voltage drop to me’ and ask two questions about it and know whether they can do it or not. We drill down into the core theory of this and let them demonstrate this in the form of an answer to a question or a demonstration of skills.

In adaptive learning, “you find out what he or she knows and find those knowledge gaps through dynamic assessment by asking simple questions and exploring questions. And if you find an area where they’re not entirely solid, stop and fix them. Provide content – ​​it could be a video, a PowerPoint slide, it could be a document they need to read…. And when that’s fixed, you move on.”

Developing the right “micro-questions” or “micro-goals” that show where remedial action is needed is central to the concept’s success, Chesney said. “A traditional course that has maybe five goals can have 200 micro-goals to cover the same thing. It’s a whole different level of detail.”

Chesney said the institute will include six academies. These include in-house training for Repairfy’s 400 certified technicians; product training; FAS; advanced diagnostics; Sales and leadership geared towards shopkeepers; and an I-CAR Alliance Academy.

At the I-CAR Alliance, “our vision is that a lot of their content isn’t as robust as we’d like,” he said. “We’re going to take some of the content that fits our business model and create a more robust version of it that still meets their standards.

“I-CAR is great. You are a wonderful organization. I support them 1,000%. And what I want to do is take their model and the corresponding content that we are bringing in with our clients, improve that and create the adaptive version of those courses.”

Chesney said Automotive Training Group (ATG), a leading technical training company recently acquired by Repairify, will add advanced mechanical training to the program offering. When asked which certifications the institute could offer, he replied: “The team is expanding these. The low-handling fruits are things like ADAS.”

He said Repairify is talking about sharing its training program with “strategic partners.” Repairify already has an agreement with 3M to conduct training at the new facility the company is building in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is in discussion with I-CAR about sharing space at its new Chicagoland facility.

The remaining Centers of Excellence will likely be physically located across the country, within a four or five hour drive or short flight for most shopkeepers and technicians. Each will include a variety of spaces to enhance learning, including classrooms, oral exam supervision rooms and a shop area for students to demonstrate their ability to carry out their learned skills. They will also include retail ADAS calibration bays to generate revenue that offsets some of the program’s costs.

At the Centers for Excellence, students “can come to this facility and, for example, take two certifications that we offer and two certifications that 3M offers and one certification that Snap-On offers and one certification that Snap-On offers in one place. That is the vision.”

Building the program “is a big, hairy, bold goal,” he said. He predicted it would take at least 10 years for it to come into full fruition.

Chesney, who came out of short retirement to take on the new role at Repairify, said he intends to stay long enough to see the Richardson facility come online. In addition, to get to the point where “we provide adaptive content, we take exams and practical exams in all disciplines, it will take several years to get there. But I have a team that understands the vision and has the skills to make it happen.”
