It’s about a month later than originally planned, but Hickory Motor Speedway will wrap up the 2022 racing season with the 25th annual Fall Brawl this Saturday, November 12.

Since opening in 1951 as a half-mile dirt track, Hickory Motor Speedway has served as the hub for short track racing in North Carolina. Some of racing’s biggest stars have competed at the track, which is now a 0.363-mile asphalt oval. These include legendary names like Junior Johnson, Jack Ingram, Harry Gant, Tommy Houston and Ralph Earnhardt, all of whom have won track championships in Hickory.

While times have changed, the popularity and short track culture at Hickory Motor Speedway has not. Known as the “Birthplace of NASCAR Stars,” the track, now operated by promoter Kevin Piercy, will continue to host NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series events from March through October.

The Fall Brawl usually takes place in October and serves as the non-point season finale for the premier late model stock car division. The 2022 edition, which will be the 25th edition of the race, has been postponed to November 12 to ensure tire availability.

Fall Brawl History, Winner

Hickory Motor Speedway has hosted a major event every fall for decades, but the event known as the Fall Brawl wasn’t created until 1998.

The inaugural event was won by a man best known as the NASCAR Cup Series Championship crew chief, Rodney Childers. But long before he became a successful team manager for Stewart-Haas Racing and Kevin Harvick, Childers was a veteran competitor for Late Models in the Southeast.

Childers was the first of many recognizable names to win Case Brawl. Josh Berry, the 2020 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series National Champion and five-time NASCAR Xfinity Series race winner, is the only multiple Fall Brawl winner. He has won the event a whopping four times.

Denny Hamlin, driver for Joe Gibbs Racing and co-owner of 23XI Racing, made his name winning Fall Brawl in 2003, three years before his first full season in the NASCAR Cup Series. 2021 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion Ben Rhodes won the 2013 Fall Brawl.

Other notable names to win Case Brawl include Anthony Alfredo, Dennis Setzer, Tyler Ankrum, Taylor Gray, Matt McCall, Pietro Fittipaldi, and Coleman Pressley. Mason Diaz is the Fall Brawl race champion in the Late Model Stock Car class.
