RHT RailHaul Technologies Inc. Introduces its Self-Propelled Electric Freight Rail Vehicle – GlobeNewswire | CarTailz

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Nov. 16, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — RHT RailHaul Technologies Inc. is pleased to announce that the Company has completed the design, manufacture and assembly of its first battery powered demonstration rail car.

RailHaul’s first vehicle is based on a traditional side dump truck. RailHaul has added its unique battery electric propulsion system and a remote operation and control system. Using off-the-shelf components to ensure low cost and high reliability, the RailHaul vehicle is revolutionary in its design and performance. The RailHaul heavy-duty truck offers an alternative to heavy-duty diesel mining trucks to save mining companies millions of dollars in transportation costs while accelerating their progress in reducing greenhouse gases.

Rail vehicles are inherently more efficient than trucks, and RailHaul is working to not only bring its technology to the mining sector, but also to help improve efficiency at ports and improve access to remote communities and critical resources.

Studies of mining customers’ transport routes have shown potential cost savings of 30-40% and CO2 reductions of up to 95%. This is consistent with long-term results from the conversion of diesel city buses from diesel to battery electric.

Operational and validation testing of RailHaul’s demonstrator vehicle is ongoing, including testing of RailHaul’s proprietary AC traction system. First results show that design and performance expectations are met. Once field trials are complete, this first demonstrator vehicle will serve as a rolling platform for RailHaul’s innovations. It will provide a testbed for RailHaul and its partners to apply next-generation designs and other technologies, including advanced semi-autonomous control and hydrogen propulsion systems.

Michael Price, President, CEO and Co-Founder of RailHaul said, “We have already seen significant interest in our approach and technology from leading mining companies, ports and rail operators in North America. This first vehicle is an important step in proving that we can deliver the performance and value we talked about.”

The RailHaul system is based on a heavy-duty self-propelled rail vehicle that is remotely or semi-autonomously controlled and operated individually or in a multi-car combination of powered and non-powered rail vehicles. The vehicles are highly configurable and offer distributed power and energy harvesting capability. This allows the vehicle to climb much steeper grades at higher speeds to increase productivity than traditional rail or truck systems. The initial focus is on open pit applications,
Ports and remote communities where operating cycles benefit greatly from RailHaul’s innovative approach.

Frank Donnelly, another co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, said: “We incorporate proven components and systems into our designs to deliver low-risk, highly reliable and customized transportation solutions. Significantly lower capital and operating costs with dramatically lower greenhouse gas emissions are achievable with our electric RailHaul freight vehicle.”

Work is already underway on the design of the next generation of RailHaul, with production scheduled for mid-2023. The next vehicle will incorporate additional technologies for remote operation alongside the learnings from today’s demonstration unit.

RailHaul’s utility vehicle is scheduled to be available for demonstrations at mining sites and rail maintenance sites over the next year to show how it can handle steep grades and extreme conditions, and to validate its environmental benefits and economic value.
