November may only have just begun, but Thanksgiving Day 2022 — and its long grocery store receipts — will be here when a turkey shakes its tail. Luckily, stores like BJ’s, ShopRite, and Safeway have special free turkey giveaways that can save you money this year.
Shoppers can expect much higher prices for the main attraction of the holiday table this year. The cost of turkeys has taken a double hit this season: in addition to inflation, outbreaks of avian flu have drastically reduced production in the poultry industry.
With slower production and rising inflation driving food prices 11% higher than last year, American families’ Thanksgiving dinners will no doubt become more expensive overall. The nationwide average for wholesale whole birds rose to as much as $1.69 a pound last week, compared with about $1.15 at the same time last year, according to a USDA report.
Don’t get the holiday blues just yet—many supermarkets can help you save money with deals and promotions on virtually every part of the Thanksgiving meal, including the opportunity to wrap a free turkey. Offerings may vary by location, and you can also learn about giveaways and local pantries for those with financial needs through United Way 2-1-1.
We’ve rounded up a cornucopia of the best deals on turkey and other popular Thanksgiving dinner foods you can pick up to make this high-priced holiday season a little less stressful.
